Education Department finalising disciplinary procedure

 

Upington –The Northern Cape Department of Education and its partners are meeting in Upington to finalize the disciplinary procedure to deal with learner ill discipline at the level of the school.

 

At the work session that started on Wednesday, the workshop deals with  handling discipline and reporting offences, which include the reporting of serious offences that a learner commit in the school environment

 

Speaking during the second day of the workshop John Taolo Gaetsewe SADTU regional secretary, William Plaatjie, welcomed the process which is lead by the Department and pledged their support to ensure that learner ill-discipline is minimized at school levels.

 

“We welcome this process and we will engage our members to participate in making sure that we don’t compromise the rights of learners,” said Mr Plaatjie.

 

Frances Baard District Director, Mr Esley Kistoo, says the Department is proactive in curbing learner ill-discipline through adhoc raids in schools and Adopt a cop.

 

“As part of training the new School Governing Bodies and school management, we emphasize the need to curb learner ill-discipline at our schools. From time to time, we have our unannounced raids in schools to inspect whether there are learners with illegal substances and dangerous weapons. We have the Adopt a cop which each of schools are having,’said Kistoo.

 

The Department is having the incident reporting tool which is web based. This tool is aimed assisting the schools to capture and report incidences to the Department as they happen at the school.

 

Upon the completion of this workshop, schools management and School Governing Body (SGB) will receive training from the department.
