More Learners Participate In Athletics Championships

Prieska – Prieska High School stadium was packed to its capacity on Friday as Primary Schools and Secondary learners from the Pixley-ka-Seme district participated in their District Athletics Championships.

In the effort to secure their place in the provincial Championships,  learners had to battle it out in various sporting codes, amongst the sporting codes in the day  included, Javelin, 100m, 200m and 800m races, High jump as well as the Low jump.

Schools athletics forms the basis of schools’ sport as almost all schools take part in some form of athletics. Schools participate in inter-house athletics meetings, circuit/cluster meetings and ultimately in the District Championship each academic year.

District sports Francina McKay was impressed and overwhelmed with the turn up on Friday, “We are very happy with the show-up from our learners who came in numbers to participate in this Championships, this year our number of learners who took part has increased compared to the previous years, we had 1080 learners from High and Primary Schools”.

With all the districts completed their Championships, the focus will now be shifted to the provincial Championships that will take place on March 7-8 at De Beers stadium in Kimberley.

About 100 learners are expected to represent the province at the National Championships set to take place in Paarl, Western Cape (Primary schools). The high school national championship will be held in Polokwane, old Peter Mokaba stadium.
