Veritas High receive fully functional computer lab

De Aar - The recent handover of the Computer Lab by the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Dr.  Siyabonga Cwele in partnership with State Information Technology Agency (SITA) came as a relief for both learners and educators of Veritas High School in De Aar.

In the past the school didn’t have any proper Information Communication Technology  Centre, the newly opened internet connected lab consists of 30 computers, 1 laptop, whiteboard and a projector at the cost of R500 000,  the additional donated 10 computers will be utilized for admin work.

Speaking during the official handover Cwele said the lab will enable learners to access educational content, provide them with connectivity to the internet and most importantly assist teachers in critical ICT skills.

“Today’s world has transformed and most of the things revolve around technology, this handover will not only bring change to the learners but this will be another form to equip educators with relevant ITC knowledge.  Government has been prioritizing the importance of internet connection, particularly to those who come from the townships and previously disadvantaged areas”, Cwele said.

Research has shown that learners with access to integrated learning tools including library, computers and reading resources demonstrate higher achievement, improved literacy and greater chances of success.

Veritas principal Dorothy van Wyk welcomed the donation saying learners at her school will make use of the lab to their best abilities.

“The challenge of literacy and numeracy is a national concern, I’m confident that with the donation of this lab learners will improve on those fields. With  the introduction of Computer Applications Technology (CAT)  as part of the curriculum which is the study of the integrated components of a computer system (hardware and software) and the practical techniques the donation will come in handy to assist learners to shine in the subject ”, she said.

Leaner Ronaldo van Wyk shared the same sentiments her principal saying as learners they need to make use of the facility to their best capacity in order to have the best overall pass rate.
