Sod turning of Steynville and Vaal-Oranje Primary School

The MEC for Education, Ms Martha Bartlett officiated the sod turning for two new schools in the Pixley Ka Seme District, Steynsville Primary and Vaal-Oranje Primary. The overcrowding at various schools in Hopetown and Douglas necessitated the Department of Education to build these schools to ensure a conducive environment for quality public education in our schools.

These two schools will be built at an estimated cost of R49million each and the expected completion date is at the end of 2017. Both schools will accommodate more than 1000 learners and will have the follow facilities available:

1x Admin block,

25 x Classrooms,

2x Ablutions,

1x Media Centre,

1x Science Lab,

1x Computer,

Double ECD classroom,

Nutrition Centre,

1x School Hall and,

1x Sports-field.

We are confident that these new schools will further contribute to the improvement of the overall learner performance in the Pixley Ka Seme District. This being the only District that managed to record an improvement in their National Senior Certificate results with a pass percentage of 75.5%.

As a Department we are celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela and honouring his legacy with the construction of these new schools. We all know that Nelson Mandela was an ambassador for Education in his own right and believed that it is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world.

We will continue to improve the lives of our people by addressing poverty and inequality through Education. We are undoing the injustices of the past by transforming the education system to one that is inclusive and accessible to all. We will not rest until every child have access to quality public education. We urge all our communities, parents and teachers to work with us as we move South Africa forward. The children are our future, and we will continue to invest in their future towards the realisation of their dreams and aspirations.

Nothing will derail us from delivering on our commitment to the people of this beautiful province to ensure that the doors of learning stay open for the provision of quality public education. Ours is an ideal that strives toward the provision of requisite foundational knowledge and skills that will enable all people in the province to meaningful participate in the mainstream, economy, including the development and growth thereof.

End.
