Northern Cape flag flies high in Spelling Bee Competition

The Integrated National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) as part of the Getting the Nation to Read Campaign hosted the National Spelling Bee Championships in Pretoria.

The number of schools that enrolled for participation has grown tremendously in relation to previous years. In 2016, 224 learners from 71 schools from all five (5) districts and one (1) home school qualified for the district eliminations.  This competition demonstrates the importance of the three (3) pillars on which the basic education system depends, namely public ordinary school, independent schools and home education.

The Provincial eliminations took place on Thursday, 8 September 2016, at the Masiza Primary School in Kimberley. Three champion spellers represented our Province this past weekend at the National Championships, Unisa Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria.

We wish to congratulate, nine year old, Mayuri Governder that receives home education in Kimberley on her outstanding achievement in the National Spelling Bee Competition, the top learner in the Primary School Category. An accomplishment of this nature reflects the potential, commitment and hard work that was put in. Indeed we are very proud of our little diamond, Mayuri Governder.

This competition not only provides a valuable educational learning experience for learners, but also allows them to engage in healthy competition. Learners gain competency over vocabulary and this allow them to excel at reading and writing. It instills self-confidence to speak in public and accept their mistakes, while also getting the applause their hard work deserves.

Her achievement should serve as motivation for more academic diamonds to be discovered in the Northern Cape. It shows that that the quality of Education in the Northern Cape is reaping the fruits of success. It also proves, that our learners from Northern Cape doesn't need to back down or even feel intimidated when they compete with the rest of the country. The Northern Cape Department of Education remains committed to provide every child with the best opportunity to succeed in life, through programmes such as the Spelling Bee Competition to groom and shape them for the wonderful as prosperous future that awaits them.

End.
