NC Autumn Camps kicks-off

The Northern Cape Department of Education is set to have learners from across the Province behind desks during our annual Autumn Camps, which will take from 3-6 April 2018 and will primarily focus on Borderline Learners, Top Achieving Learners and the Talent Development Programme.

The Autumn Camp Programme is specifically designed to enhance Grade 12 learners’ performance particularly in schools that underperformed in the focus subjects in the 2017 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. The programme is strategically designed to assist learners in all aspects of the current Matric syllabus, but especially in those areas that were highlighted as problematic in the 2017 Diagnostic Report and the Northern Cape Item Analysis.

The Autumn Camp Programme will consist of a series of daily presentations and tutorials with consolidation of content as the main driver of the programme. Learners will also be given notes, exercises and suggested solutions each day on the topics covered, as well as past Grade 12 examination papers.

Learners will be assisted with conceptual understanding of the core topics that they will be examined on in their final examinations. Tutoring will be done by experienced teachers who have a record of high learner achievement. Life Orientation sessions on Life Skills and Career Pathing will also be infused into the programme at the Camp for Top-Achieving Learners.

These Autumn Camps will reinforce classroom learning by allowing learners to put their knowledge and skills into practice through revision exercises and the consolidation of content. It is expected that 2000 learners from 65 schools across the Province will attend the 8 Residential Camps scheduled as follow:

-John Toalo Gaetsewe District: Kalahari HS, Bathlaro-Thlaping HS and Deben PS
-Frances Baard District: Kimberley Girls High, Kimberley Technical HS, Northern Cape HS, NC Agricultural HS and Diamantveld HS.

These learners will receive guidance in career choices, study skills and exam techniques. The targeted Subjects are Afrikaans HL, English FAL, Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, History, Agricultural Sciences, Geoagraphy and Accounting.

The Talent Development Autumn Camp for Top Achieving Grade 11 and 12 learners is done in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology and the University of Stellenbosch. This Camp will take place at Kimberley Girls High and will only focus on Mathematics and Science. The identified 80 learners, 40 Grade 11 learners and 40 Grade 12 learners that was identified are averaging 70% for both subjects.

We do believe that the Autumn Camps Programme will contribute to an improvement in the overall learner academic performance and success rate of our Grade 12 learners. We will continue to invest into the future of all our children to ensure that every child succeed. This is our commitment to our learners and the people of the Province.
