New academic year kick start

Learning and teaching resumed from the first day of the 2017 academic year when schools re-opened, learners braved heavy rains to return to their respective school.

It was an exciting moment for learners who entered the schooling system for the very first time; mostly they were seen accompanied by parents/guardians to various schools around the province.

Northern Cape MEC for Education Martha Bartlett accompanied by departmental officials and the national Spelling Bee completion winner Mayuri Govender (9 year old)    paid a visit to three local schools around Kimberley, her first visit was at Lucretia Primary School situated in Roodepan, she then moved to Progress Primary School in Colville and concluded her visits at Molehabangwe Primary School based in Galeshewe.

In all the three schools she motivated the learners to be dedicated on their school work, as part of the back to school campaign, in partnership with cellphone network provider MTN, the department handed over 3000 school bags and stationery cases to all the learners in the three schools.

Speaking at the three schools MEC Bartlett stretched the importance of parental involvement as a way that can improve learner attainment in all the grades and also most importantly the efforts invested by the educators towards the education system in the province.

“The ANC – LED Government has taken a decision to prioritize Education and make it a societal issue. This decision must be understood clearly by all of us. As part of improving Learning Outcomes, we are also saying communities should help us as well, because other reasons inhibiting achievement of Learning Outcomes are related to Parental Involvement.    It is not only the responsibility of educators to make sure that our learners succeed”, MEC said.

The MEC expect greater accountability from the educators, this means they must be at work, on time, teaching. It also means they will uphold the integrity of the profession in the eyes the community at all material times.

As part of the new academic year Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM) has been delivered to schools, such materials assists learners throughout the learning year to achieve their goals.
