NCDOE honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela

The Northern Cape Department of Education is continuing to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela through its programmes in various school communities. His memory, his work, and his beliefs live on in the hearts and minds of South Africans and in the global community, in people playing their part to improve the state of the world. Madiba's love for children was unconditional, as he believed that the future and prosperity of our country is in the classroom.

His legacy continues to inspire our work and serves as encouragement to do more. Therefore, in honouring his legacy and celebrating the centenary of Nelson Mandela, the Northern Cape Department of Education will be handing over 100 pairs of school shoes on a weekly basis to deserving learners across the Province.

We have officially commenced with the Legacy programme today, at the Lowryville Primary School in Colesberg, where MEC Martha Bartlett accompanied by Executive Mayor of the Pixley Ka Seme District Municipality, Ms Thenjiwe Kibi, Mayor of Umsobomvu Municipality, Mr Mzwandile Toto, Member of Parliament, Ms Rachel Adams and the full complement of the Municipal Council handed over 108 pairs of school shoes to deserving learners. Over the next two months we will be handing over close to 3000 pairs of school shoes at various schools across the Province.

The donation of school shoes is a necessity to learners, especially during the Winter to access schools, as it contributes to restore their dignity, instil self confidence, provides a feeling of belonging and ultimately contribute to the quality of education. We call on the private sector to join us and strengthen our efforts of the Northern Cape Department of Education to take action, inspire change and make every day a Mandela Day. As Mandela said: "It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it".

End.
