Opening of marking centres

The Northern Cape Department of Education has taken all the measures to ensure that the marking centres adhere to the COVID-19 regulations and guidelines.A total of 231 661 answer scripts need to be marked by 759 Markers, 166 Senior Markers, 22 Deputy Chief Markers, 47 Chief Markers and 47 Internal Moderators. Administrative duties will also be dealt with by 200 Examination Assistants at 4 Examination Centres in Kimberley.

The MEC for Education, Mr Zolile Monakali visited marking centres yesterday, to ensure that its all systems go. The MEC officially opened the marking centres today and indicated during his opening address that the 2020 school academic was indeed a very challenging year in many facets. "We have gathered with high hopes and expectations for the Class of 2020, that they will do us proud. The 2020 NSC Examination in many aspects was very challenging due to the increase in candidates that sat for the examinations as well as leaked examination papers. This had a very negative impact on the credibility of the 2020 NSC Examinations.

This places a greater responsibility on you to carefully, with precision and a high level of accuracy, mark all answer scripts to ensure that it is a true reflection of the candidate’s academic achievement".

Marking is considered as one stage in an integrated, collaborative process of teaching and learning, requiring awareness of the teacher’s dual role as a coach and assessor are now calibrated. It also requires the marker to understand fully the subject content and the context of the learners.
