Department of Education Extranet

Early Childhood Development function shift

The Head of Department Ms Moira Marais and senior management of Curriculum Chief Directorate today officially welcomed the ECD officials moving over to the Department from Social Development Department.

The official date for the migration of the Early Childhood Development Centres is Friday, 01 April 2022. A total of 27 officials from the Department of Social Development are expected to move over to the Department of Education.

The ECD function shift follows a pronouncement by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019 during SONA wherein he indicated that the ECD centre function will migrate from the Department of Social Development to Department of Education.

Through work streams such as Human Resources, Finance and Budgets, Legislation and Contracts, Immovable and Movable Assets as well as Stakeholder Engagement to mention but a few, both Department have worked tirelessly to bring the function shift to fruition and ensure all children in ECD Centres receive quality education and the best support during the early stage of their lives.

The Department recognise this as unique and significant opportunity to improve access to quality early learning and to enhance the ECD delivery system to better serve the children of South Africa.
