LAUNCH OF THE MEC BOOK CLUB

Research has shown that the vast majority of South African school children cannot read for meaning by the age of 10 – even in their home language; and almost a third are still functionally illiterate in English by the age of 12. Currently South African children are amongst some of the poorest performers in international reading assessments.

Thus it is clear that a nationally coordinated and collaborative strategy is required to address these reading challenges and to coordinate relevant and successful activities currently taking place. Through the MEC Book Club, we aim to build a collective understanding and raise high level commitments from multiple stakeholders. The MEC Book Club launch will advocate for a network of book clubs across communities in the Province.
