Northern Cape Schools Begins 2026 Academic Year with Vigour

The first week of the 2026 school academic year in the Northern Cape was marked by significant activity, underscoring the Department of Education’s commitment to quality teaching and learning.  

Back to School Campaign

MEC for Education, Mr Abraham Vosloo, visited Homevale High School and Emmanual High School in the Frances Baard District as part of the Back to School Campaign. The MEC expressed satisfaction with the state of readiness at both schools, noting that teaching and learning commenced smoothly on the first day. He extended well wishes to educators, learners and support staff, encouraging all to strive for a productive year.  “Let us raise the bar of education in the Province,” said MEC Vosloo, emphasising the importance of collective effort in achieving excellence.  

Visit to Kenhardt High School

In the ZF Mgcawu District, MEC Vosloo congratulated Kenhardt High School for achieving a 100% pass rate in the 2025 National Senior Certificate Examinations. Addressing staff and learners, he commended their hard work and dedication, urging them to maintain the momentum through continued sacrifice and commitment.  

The achievement stands as a testament to the school’s resilience and determination, setting a benchmark for others in the Province.  

Opening of Upington Primary School

The MEC also officiated the amalgamation of Op Die Voorpos Primary School and Fanie Malan Primary School in Upington. The newly established Upington Primary School was described as a beacon of hope that will serve the broader community.  

Acknowledging the efforts of departmental officials, school management and governing body members, MEC Vosloo praised the successful conclusion of the amalgamation process. The opening of the school marks a new chapter in providing accessible and quality education to learners in the area.  

The first week of schooling in 2026 has demonstrated the Province’s readiness and determination to deliver on its educational mandate. From ensuring smooth commencement of teaching and learning, celebrating outstanding achievements, and the inaugurating new school, the Department of Education has set a strong tone for the new schooling academic year.
