Empowering Learners Through Digital Innovation
On 8 May, as South Africa marked 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution, a significant milestone was celebrated at Paballelo High School in Upington.
Deputy Minister Nonceba Mhauli, together with Mr Charles Chen, Deputy CEO of Huawei, handed over a fully equipped Cyber Lab that expanded access to digital learning and equipped learners with critical 21st‑century skills.
The new facility included a Smart IdeaHub, laptops, and digital learning resources that supported teaching, learning, innovation, and connectivity in the classroom. The initiative formed part of a broader public‑private partnership that bridged the digital divide, promoted STEM education, and empowered young people in underserved communities with the tools needed to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
Deputy Minister Mhauli delivered the keynote address, encouraginglearners to seize the opportunities provided by the new ICT lab:
“To the matric class of 2026, I want to encourage you to make full use of the opportunities that this new lab and its resources will provide. Use this facility to research career opportunities, apply to universities and colleges on time, and prepare yourselves for the future economy. Technology is a gateway to opportunity, and you must use it to unlock your full potential.”
The handover reflected the enduring spirit of collaboration between government, the private sector, and communities — ensuring that the promise of the Constitution continued to be realised through education, innovation, and empowerment.
