Northern Cape Talent Shines at SASCE 2026
The South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) Provincial Finals opened on 28 May 2026 at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley, bringing together more than 4 350 learners from 32 primary schools and 28 high schools. This annual celebration of discipline, unity, and cultural heritage through music once again affirmed the Northern Cape’s place at the heart of South Africa’s artistic excellence.
In his keynote, MEC Abraham Vosloo highlighted the transformative power of the arts in education and the historical significance of this year’s competition.
“Today, this venue becomes more than just a stage. It becomes a place where talent, culture, discipline and unity come together through the powerful language of music.” — MEC Abraham Vosloo
He reminded audiences that the 2026 edition carries special meaning as it commemorates 50 years since the June 1976 Youth Uprising, honouring the courage of young people who shaped South Africa’s democratic journey.
This year’s repertoire proudly included works by Northern Cape composers, giving learners the opportunity to perform music rooted in their community:
- Nkamogele Morena — a hymn composed by OG Modutwane, often sung in solemn worship and now celebrated on the SASCE stage.
- Kgarakgatsego — composed by K.G. Diradingoe, performed as part of the solo repertoire, showcasing artistry and local creativity.
These inclusions highlight the Northern Cape’s contribution to South Africa’s musical heritage and affirm SASCE’s role in uplifting indigenous voices.
The Provincial Finals set the stage for the upcoming National SASCE Finals, which will be held from 27 June to 3 July 2026 at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria, Gauteng. Choirs from across South Africa will unite in a grand showcase of choral excellence, carrying forward the spirit of discipline, unity, and cultural heritage.
