National Teaching Awards

The National Teaching Awards (NTA), launched in 2000, mark their 26th year in 2026 as the flagship teacher appreciation programme of the Department of Basic Education. The NTAs honour exceptional teachers who show extraordinary dedication, often under challenging conditions, and highlight their vital role in advancing inclusive, quality education across South Africa.

For 2026, the NTAs have been refined and broadened, with updated categories and processes to ensure fairness, transparency, and accessibility. Notably, the two Special School categories have been replaced with:

  • Excellence in Inclusive Education Teaching
  • Excellence in Inclusive Education Leadership

Nominations will be conducted entirely online, streamlining submissions and improving efficiency across districts and provinces.

Key Information

  • All nomination forms must be completed, signed, and submitted online with supporting documents.
  • Closing date for district nominations: 31 March 2026.
  • Candidates must undergo SACE vetting and screening before progressing to provincial level.
  • District adjudication panels will include curriculum officials, circuit managers, unions, retired managers, and other stakeholders.

The NTAs remain a cornerstone of teacher recognition, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to valuing educators and promoting excellence in teaching and leadership.
