Northern Cape shines at the NSNP Best Schools and District Awards 

 

Seodin  - Host Province, Northern Cape were the biggest winners in today’s National School Nutrition Programme Best Schools and Districts Awards. 

 

The historic event  graced  by the Department of Basic Education Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule and MEC for Education ,Abraham Vosloo took place in Seodin Primary School outside Kuruman. 

 

Namakwa district won the Best National District  award in the country while Van Zylsrus Full Service School  from the Joan Taolo Gaitsewe district scooped the  National Best Farm School award and the neighbouring Province Free State, Isaac Mhlambi Primary School won the Best School Award.

 

These  awards were introduced during the 2009/10 financial year, since its inception it was for the first time the department hosts these prestigious   national awards.

 

The National School Nutrition Programme Best Schools and District Awards are aimed on  recognising excellence, innovation and the dedication of districts and schools in the successful implementation of the programme.

 

The awards are also utilised as a platform to celebrate the dedication and hard work of key role players such the School Management Teams, Educators, Volunteer Food Handlers and School Governing Bodies for their daily contribution and dedication towardsthe success of the programme and showcasing good practices.

 

When delivering the keynote address Dr Mhaule said: “We are hosting these awards on a very special day in our country’s calendar,  the birth of the constitution which was adopted by the National Assembly on 8 May 1996 and signed into law by former President Nelson Mandela on 10 December 1996. We celebrate the  good impact by the NSNP, which carries the potential of positive learner outcomes, this programme also improves learner attendance, some of the schools offers breakfast which is very critical for our learners. The NSNP is the country’s largest children nutrition intervention programme feeds over 9 million learners. Through this programme, overall academic has been improving rapidly”. 

 

Deputy Minister further encouraged all the schools to have their own  food gardens as part of the NSNP innovations and  promoting healthy eating and balanced meals.
